Lab Studies:
The fluid culture from the last episode 6 months prior grew methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. The culture from the current episode was later negative for bacterial growth. Case Photo #2

Other Studies:
Ultrasound was used to confirm localization of the fluid collection and to exclude intra-articular extension. Right knee ultrasound demonstrated well-circumscribed hypoechoic fluid within the prepatellar bursa without intra-articular effusion noted. There were well-defined, smooth margins around the swelling. No communication with the joint or skin was seen. No obvious traumatic tendon ruptures or ligamentous tears were appreciated on ultrasound. Case Photo #3
