American Medical Society for Sports Medicine For Immediate Release May 12, 2011		Back
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Alison Brooks, MD, MPH was awarded the Best Overall Research Award at the 20th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, which took place April 30-May 4, 2011 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Brooks’ study, “The effect of lace-up ankle braces on acute ankle injury in high school basketball players” showed that the use of a lace-up ankle brace reduced the incidence, but not the severity of acute ankle injuries in both male and female high school basketball athletes. The study evaluated 1,460 high school male and female athletes from 46 schools who were then randomly assigned to the braced or no brace control group. The braced group wore the lace-up ankle braces during the 2009-2010 basketball season. Athletic trainers recorded brace compliance, athletic exposures and injuries. The study demonstrated that the rate of acute ankle injury was 0.47 in the braced group compared with 1.41 in the control group. The severity of injuries in the two groups did not show a significant difference. Detailed evaluation of the data showed the incidence of injury in those with a previous injury was 0.83 in the braced group compared with 1.79 in the control group. Those without a previous ankle injury showed a significantly decreased incidence of acute injury during the study (0.40 in the braced, 1.35 in the control group. Dr. Brooks’ co-authors were Scott Hetzel, MS, and Timothy A. McGuine, PhD. A plaque and $500 cash award are presented to the individual who is deemed by the research committee to have performed a research project that is cutting edge and practical in the field of sports medicine Dr. Brooks is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin. She is board certified in Pediatrics and Sports Medicine and provides medical coverage for Badger women's ice hockey and men's soccer. She received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee-Memphis School of Medicine in 2000, went on to complete a residency in Pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington and then a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison, Wisconsin. AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of physicians whose members are dedicated to education, research, collaboration and fellowship within the field of Sports Medicine. Founded in 1991, the AMSSM is now comprised of over 1,800 Sports Medicine Physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting.
