SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Aurelia Nattiv, MD, Professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, presented “Too Thin to Train? Return to Play Decisions in the Athlete with Disordered Eating” at the 20th Annual American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah held April 30 – May 4, 2011.

The conference, with over 1000 sports medicine physicians from across the United States and 5 countries around the world, featured lectures on advances in sports medicine. Dr. Nattiv discussed controversies regarding training in the setting of disordered eating, focusing on safe training for the athlete with eating disorders.

Unhealthy athletes are being cleared for training and competition. There may be long-term, potentially irreversible problems with skeletal and reproductive health,” Nattiv states. Safe competition includes a careful examination of risks of participation. If the risk of competing outweighs the benefit of the sport, participation is typically not allowed.

Dr. Nattiv is a Professor in the Division of Sports Medicine and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Additionally she serves as the Director of the UCLA Osteoporosis Center, Co-Director of the UCLA Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and is a Team Physician in the UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Los Angeles California.
