American Medical Society for Sports Medicine For Immediate Release May 12, 2011		Back
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Anthony Beutler, MD, LTC USAF, MC, presented “Optimizing Return from ACL Tear: Myths, Legends and Actual Truth” at the 20th Annual American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah from April 30 – May 4, 2011. The conference, with over 1,000 sports medicine physicians from across the United States and 5 countries around the world, featured several lectures on advances in sports medicine. Dr. Beutler reported on several key findings from the JUMP ACL study which evaluated risks associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in cadets at the Air Force, Naval and West Point Academies. He shared data indicating a 6-fold increase in risk for an ACL tear in those entering the academies with a previous ACL tear. “This was clearly the highest risk factor we have seen,” added Beutler. He also shared that, in the study population, 87 percent of the recurrent tears in females occurred in the same leg as the previous tear, and 100 percent of the tears in males occurred in the opposite leg. After showing how force and rotational changes in injured athletes differed from those who never tore their ACL, Dr. Beutler cautioned that we should be “getting these athletes back to being mechanically better than they were before their original injury.” Dr. Beutler is Chief of the Injury Prevention Research Laboratory and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, MD. The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) is a multi-disciplinary organization of physicians whose members are dedicated to education, research, collaboration and fellowship within the field of Sports Medicine. Founded in 1991, the AMSSM is now comprised of over 1,800 Sports Medicine Physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting.
