OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS:  The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine recently awarded Jeorg Jerosch MD, PhD, the annual Best Research Presentation Award for excellence in sports medicine research at it’s 2008 Rendezvous II Annual Meeting held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Jerosch’s study, Efficacy and Safety of Hyalgan G-F 20 vs. placebo in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis was a prospective, multi-center, randomized, double-blind study, of patients diagnosed with knee OA to receive one 6-mL injection of Hylan G-F 20 or saline. 253 patients were randomized to hylan G-F 20 (n=124) or placebo (n=129). This double-blind placebo-controlled study showed that one injection of Hylan G-F 20 was safe and provided symptomatic relief lasting up to 6 months in patients with knee OA.

Dr. Jerosch is an attending physician at the Johanna-Etienne Krankenhaus, Klinik für Orthopädie in Neuss, Germany.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) was organized in 1991 by physicians who recognized the need for an organization within the field of sports medicine that approached athletes, exercising individuals and teams comprehensively with consultative and continuous care of their orthopedic, medical, nutritional and psychosocial issues. Although sports medicine concepts are often thought of in conjunction with professional and elite athletes, these concepts apply to athletes of all levels including grade school, high school, college and recreational athletes. AMSSM is comprised of over 1000 Sports Medicine Physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting.
