OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS:  Dr James Garrick delivered the Annual Hough Memorial lecture at the 2008 Rendezvous II Annual Meeting held in Las Vegas Nevada. Dr Garrick’s talk, The Child Dancer: the forgotten Athlete. Ballet is a female dominated sport with 77% of reported injuries in female participants. 41% of all injuries are overuse and an additional 35% related to sprains and strains. Almost all injuries are in the lower back and leg with foot injuries leading at 25.9% followed by knee (20.6%), ankle (17%), hip 9.3%, leg (8.6%) and back (7.3%). Dr Garrick discussed the presentation and rehabilitation of these common injuries.
Dr. Garrick is an attending physician at the Center for Sports Medicine in San Francisco, California.

David O. Hough was one of the original founders of AMSSM. His career from 1978 to his untimely death in 1996 was filled with the orderly development of Sports Medicine as a discipline. He was considered a fine teacher, role model and leader at Michigan State University.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) was organized in 1991 by physicians who recognized the need for an organization within the field of sports medicine that approached athletes, exercising individuals and teams comprehensively with consultative and continuous care of their orthopedic, medical, nutritional and psychosocial issues. Although sports medicine concepts are often thought of in conjunction with professional and elite athletes, these concepts apply to athletes of all levels including grade school, high school, college and recreational athletes. AMSSM is comprised of over 1000 Sports Medicine Physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting.
