For Immediate Release Apr 11, 2019

HOUSTON – The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) is partnering with Volunteer Houston on its Humanitarian Service Project to revitalize Looscan Elementary School playground and SPARK Park on Friday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The SPARK School Park Program develops neighborhood parks on public school grounds. SPARK has built more than 200 community parks in 12 different school districts throughout the Houston area and are designed based on ideas and needs of the school and surrounding neighborhoods.

There will be approximately 70 volunteers participating in the playground and park clean up. This marks the 6th year of the Humanitarian Service Project, which is supported by the AMSSM Foundation.

“AMSSM members encourage everyone, from youth athletes to weekend warriors and everyone in-between, to stay active throughout their lives,” said Dr. Robert Johnson, AMSSM Foundation President.  “We are pleased to partner with Volunteer Houston to help revitalize an outdoor space that will allow all community members to get outdoors and keep moving.”

AMSSM’s Annual Meeting takes place in Houston from April 12-17, and Volunteer Houston provided assistance coordinating the local service project, giving its membership the opportunity to have a positive impact on the community.

About the AMSSM Annual Meeting: The 2019 AMSSM Annual Meeting brings more than 2,000 sports medicine physicians together from throughout the United States and around the world. The meeting theme is, “Small Steps and Giant Leaps in Sports Medicine,” and explores the great accomplishments, evolving technology and the accumulation of new knowledge in the field of sports medicine.

About the AMSSM: AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of more than 3,800 sports medicine physicians dedicated to education, research, advocacy and the care of athletes of all ages. The majority of AMSSM members are primary care physicians with fellowship training and added qualification in sports medicine who then combine their practice of sports medicine with their primary specialty. AMSSM includes members who specialize solely in non-surgical sports medicine and serve as team physicians at the youth level, NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, MLS and NHL, as well as with Olympic and Paralympic teams. By nature of their training and experience, sports medicine physicians are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, sports teams or active individuals who are simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. www.amssm.org
