For Immediate Release May 12, 2011

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Kevin Waninger, MD was awarded the annual NCAA Award for excellence in sports medicine research at the 20th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 3, 2011.

Dr. Waninger’s study, “Community Acquired Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) Does Not Penetrate Wrestling Mats with Applied Force” showed that the MRSA bacteria does not survive on wrestling mats without nutrients supplied.

Through his research project he demonstrated that when pressure was applied to the mats, as it would with wrestlers in competition, the bacteria did not penetrate to the undersurface of the mat. In response to receiving the award, Waninger replied, “I am very surprised, and humbled to be chosen for this award. I like to thank my colleagues at East Stroudsburg University and Temple University School of Medicine for their assistance and guidance with this project.”

The NCAA CSMAS Award is awarded to the best research presentation that addresses the health and safety issues of college athletes.

Dr. Waninger, MD, MS is an Associate Professor at Temple University School of Medicine, and serves as Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
