AMSSM Launches New Branding and Messaging Campaign

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) announces the launch of a new logo, as well as a new brand and messaging campaign. AMSSM is a nearly 4,000 member, physician-only organization of sports medicine physicians, who are dedicated to the care of active people and athletes of all ages and abilities. AMSSM has rebranded its member physicians as “sports medicine physicians” to better describe their whole-person approach in the diagnosis and treatment to help people achieve their best in sports and in life.

The theme of the messaging, “We Understand You” denotes the understanding that AMSSM member sports medicine physicians have of the demands of activity and athletics, as well as the importance that these activities hold in the lives of their patients.

“It is important that our patients understand that we want to partner with them to help them become the best version of themselves through sports performance, fitness or health,” said AMSSM President Chad Asplund, MD, MPH.

An online video for the initiative, which can be found on YouTube here, highlights the value of Sports Medicine Physicians who are board-certified in sports medicine and specialize in treating the whole person with education, prevention, non-surgical treatments of injuries and ongoing care.

WHAT IS A SPORTS MEDICINE PHYSICIAN?

A sports medicine physician has significant specialized training in both the treatment and prevention of illness and injury. They are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, sports teams or active individuals who are looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sports medicine physicians specialize in non-surgical sports medicine and serve as team physicians at the youth level, NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, MLS and NHL, as well as with Olympic and Paralympic teams. Sports medicine physicians are also active in their communities through support to high schools, community sports events and to people trying to improve their health or fitness.

A Sports Medicine Physician’s Training:

  • Board Certified in a primary specialty: Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • Has obtained one to two years of additional fellowship training in Sports Medicine
  • Has passed a national Sports Medicine certification examination allowing them to be Board Certified in Sports Medicine
  • Participates in continuing medical education activities and recertification via re-examination every 10 years. This rigorous process was instituted to distinguish certified Sports Medicine Physicians from other physicians without specialized training
  • Is a leader of the Sports Medicine team, which also may include specialty physicians and surgeons, athletic trainers, physical therapists, coaches, other personnel and the athlete

The “We Understand YOU” campaign was designed not only to educate consumers on the benefits of partnering with a member of the AMSSM but also to highlight all the ways Sports Medicine Physicians help their patients keep active and improve their lives.

About the AMSSM: AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of Sports Medicine Physicians dedicated to education, research, advocacy and the care of athletes of all ages. The majority of AMSSM members are primary care physicians with fellowship training and added qualification in sports medicine who then combine their practice of sports medicine with their primary specialty. By nature of their training and experience, sports medicine physicians are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, sports teams or active individuals who are simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. www.amssm.org
