Broad Differential Diagnosis:
Differential diagnosis included a marrow infiltrative process and yellow to red marrow reconversion. Benign proliferative causes of abnormal marrow signals include myelodysplastic syndrome, polycythemia vera, myelofibrosis, mastocytosis, and reconversion of yellow to red marrow. Yellow to red marrow reconversion is seen in sickle cell disease, thalassemia, athletes, and high altitude. Malignant causes of abnormal marrow signals include leukemia and monoclonal gammopathies, such as multiple myeloma, primary amyloidosis, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, and lymphoproliferative disorder.
