Top professionals from orthopaedics, athletic training, physical therapy and primary care medical fields selected to serve as founding editors of Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach

Rosemont, Ill. – Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Wojtys is currently a professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the Sports Medicine Service, and Medical Director of MedSport, all at The University of Michigan. He is also the former team physician for the University of Michigan Athletic Department and has authored more than 70 articles. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, as well as Chairman of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Research Committee and Program Committee, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America Research Committee. Dr. Wojtys has been the recipient of the prestigious O'Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award and the Excellence in Research Award for his work in ACL injuries in female athletes.  The Board of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s (AOSSM) Medical Publishing Group is proud to announce the selections of Edward M. Wojtys, MD (Editor-in-Chief), George J. Davies, DPT, ATC, CSCS (Associate Editor – Physical Therapy Section), Matthew Gammons, MD (Associate Editor-Primary Care Section), and Riann Palmeri-Smith, PhD, ATC (Associate Editor – Athletic Training Section) as the founding editors of Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach. “The comprehensive care of athletes requires a diverse team of professionals, including athletic trainers, physical therapists, primary care physicians and orthopaedic surgeons,” Dr. Wojtys says. “I am excited to have the opportunity to work with Drs. Davies, Gammons and Palmieri-Smith to address the interrelated topics of clinical care sports medicine. Our goal with this publication is to improve the care and rehabilitation of athletes.” Sports Health, a bi-monthly publication, to be launched in January 2009, is aimed at physicians and allied health professionals who work with athletes. The Journal is a collaborative publication by AOSSM, American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM), National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and the Sports Physical Therapy Section (SPTS) and will be published by Sage Publications.Sports Health. His extensive experience in editing, research, and clinical sports medicine make him a superb choice to assume this important role. All of the members of our team, including executive editor Bruce Reider, MD have the credentials and experience to make this journal a preeminent force in sports medicine." Dr. George Davies was nominated by SPTS due to his distinguished background as an internationally known writer and speaker. He has presented at hundreds of conferences throughout the world on sports physical therapy and athletic training. In addition, he has published more than 150 articles and research abstracts, has written several books and has contributed chapters to more than 30 books. Dr. Davies was also the original co-founder and co-editor of The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. Dr. Davies is presently a Professor of Physical Therapy at Armstrong Atlantic State University and Professor-Emeritus of Physical Therapy at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse Graduate Physical Therapy Program. “Having Dr. Davies and our organization as a partner in such an exciting, collaborative publication, will allow all our patients the ability to receive the most-up-to date treatments on multiple levels, including orthopaedics, athletic training, physical therapy and primary care. SPTS is extremely excited about this multi-discipline approach to sports medicine and education. We are especially delighted to be partnering with AOSSM, NATA and AMSSM in such a noteworthy publication,” says SPTS President Kevin Wilk, DPT.  Dr. Riann Palmieri-Smith was nominated by NATA and is an Assistant Professor in Athletic Training, Movement Science and Orthopaedics at the University of Michigan. Dr. Palmieri-Smith is also the director of the University’s Neuromuscular Research Laboratory and co-director of the Human Neuromechanics Laboratory. A productive researcher, she has had 33 peer reviewed publications and more than 30 regional and national scientific presentations in the last five years. In 2007, she won the New Investigator Award from the NATA Research & Education Foundation.  Additionally, Dr. Palmieri-Smith recently served as the Section Editor for the Journal of Athletic Training in the Pathology, Physiology, and Biodynamics section and is a guest reviewer for 13 sports medicine and neuroscience journals.  “Dr. Palmieri-Smith reflects the strength of the certified athletic training community, and her contributions as associate editor to Sports Health highlight the strong connection between all the disciplines and the immense possibilities of new research and current concepts to aid patients,” adds NATA President, Chuck Kimmel, ATC. Dr. Matthew Gammons was nominated by AMSSM and is the primary care physician at the Killington Medical Clinic and the Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic where he currently works with patients incurring a variety of sports-related injuries from concussions through torn ACLs. He is also serving as a Team Physician for the U.S. Ski and snowboard teams. Dr. Gammons has served as a peer reviewer for American Family Physician, Journal of Family Practice and Family Practice Management. In 2006, he won the Harry Galanty Young Investigators Award for Outstanding Research from the AMSSM. Prior to moving to Vermont, Dr. Gammons served on the faculty of the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he still serves as Assistant Clinical Professor. “We are excited to have Dr. Gammons as our section’s associate editor and also to be a partner in the development of this new sports medicine journal. We hope this publication creates a great forum for collaboration between the primary care, orthopaedic, physical therapy and athletic training communities,” said Craig Young, MD, AMSSM President.
