Two of the athletes underwent in-office ultrasound, followed by MRI of the abdomen. Results were similar for each athlete in each study:
Ultrasound: Hematoma within the left rectus abdominis muscle with apparent disruption of muscle fibers.

MRI: Each had approximately 5 cm tridimensional rectus sheath hematoma adjacent to the inferior epigastric veins, with interruption of blood flow in the veins and surrounding hemosiderin deposits, suggesting subacute bleeding. There are torn fibers of the rectus abdominis.
