BECOME A STUDENT MEMBER

AMSSM Student membership category is for current medical students in good standing at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical schools with an interest in sports medicine. Student members may not serve on the Board and may not vote in Elections.

One-Time Dues fee of $30.00 while in medical school.

AMSSM MSIG (MEDICAL STUDENT INTEREST GROUP)

The AMSSM MSIG is a national interest group for medical students interested in sports medicine with opportunities to engage in interactive discussions with students and physicians from around the country presented via an online platform. The MSIG is led by eight officers that serve a one-year term (January through December).
 
 
 
 

AMSSM JOURNAL CLUB

AMSSM JOURNAL CLUB MEETINGS (must be signed in to access link)

As part of the AMSSM Mentor Program, the AMSSM Membership Committee is starting an AMSSM Journal Club. This is a new collaborative program of the AMSSM SMRC and MSIG Interest Groups. Each Journal Club Meeting (max: 1 hour) will have up to three (3) presentations where each Student or Resident member will be scheduled for a 20-minute segment for their article presentation/brief Q&A. The Resident and Student Presentees will be mentored by AMSSM members serving as Journal Club Advisors or Club Mentors.

GOAL - To provide a national platform for Student and Resident members to present a research article from the list of the top 120 research articles that sports medicine fellows should be familiar with. Our intent is to make this a fun learning experience to give medical students and residents Mentoring opportunities with other AMSSM members while developing skills of reviewing research articles and making PowerPoint presentations.

FREQUENCY of Journal Club Meetings – Will meet 1-2 times quarterly

HOW TO BECOME INVOLVED – Complete the online sign-up form (links below) for the role you choose to participate in. To minimize the time commitment involved, we are seeking a core group of AMSSM members serving as Club Advisors and/or Club Mentors to mentor the Presentees (Student and Resident members) that will present a PowerPoint Presentation of a research article from the top 120 research articles every sports medicine physician should be familiar with.

PRESENTEES – Student and Resident members have the opportunity to make a PowerPoint presentation/brief Q&A (max: 20 minutes on a research article from the list of top 120 research articles every sports medicine physician should be familiar with at a Journal Club Meeting. When you select your article, you will be paired with a Club Mentor (AMSSM member post-fellowship or current fellow) that has chosen to mentor the Presentee on that article by guiding the Presentee through the process that includes an outline on how to review an article and offer help in reviewing their presentation prior to their Journal Club presentation. The Presentee and Club Mentor will mutually agree on the Journal Club Meeting that the Presentee will make their presentation.

On the Presentee sign-up form, in the 1st Choice drop-down menu, please select the research article you feel passionate about and want to review and make a PowerPoint presentation on the article at a Journal Club Meeting that is mutually selected by the Presentee and their Club Mentor.

CLUB ADVISORS – A core group serving as Faculty Advisors that would participate in one Journal Club Meeting and would mentor up to max: three Presentees (Student and Resident members) scheduled to give their presentation during a specific AMSSM Journal Club Meeting (max: 1 hour) and would be available for questions prior to the presentations and attend the Journal Club Meeting to observe their three Presentees give their presentation.

Then when a Student or Resident member selects their research article from the top 120 research article list, they will be paired with the Club Mentor that has chosen to be the mentor for that article. Each Club Mentor will guide the Presentee through the process which includes an outline on how to review an article and offer help in reviewing their presentation prior to their Journal Club presentation. MEDICAL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The AMSSM Foundation offers three Medical Student Scholarship Awards made possible through the Galen Society Medical Student Scholarship fund. These awards will be given annually to help support three medical students interested in a career in sports medicine attend the AMSSM Annual Meeting. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Membership Committee and presented to three Student members who best demonstrate a commitment to a career in sports medicine.

The recipients will receive complimentary registration to the AMSSM Annual Meeting, a $500 cash award and an award plaque presented to each recipient at the AMSSM Annual Meeting. Deadline to submit is January 8, 2024 at 11:00am Central Time.

APPLYING FOR A SPORTS MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP AND INFORMATION ON THE MATCH — FAQ
  1. What type of residency should I choose to be eligible for primary care sports medicine fellowships?
    • An applicant should evaluate their interests and goals for the future when they choose a residency. A person interested in sports medicine can do a residency in family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, emergency medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Remember that your primary care training should be your priority.
  2. How do I decide which programs to apply?
    • You should decide: what area of the country you would like to train in, do you want a community or university setting, which sports do you want included in the fellowship, are you interested in doing research, what credentials does the faculty have, and what benefits does the program offer.
  3. What are the important dates to remember?
    • JUNE:  Register for ERAS Application System
    • JULY 1: ERAS application system open for data entry
    • JULY 15:  Programs can begin review of ERAS applications.
    • SEPTEMBER — NOVEMBER:  Application Deadline (varies by program)
    • SEPTEMBER:  NRMP match opens for registration
    • DECEMBER:  NRMP rank order list deadline
    • BEGINNING OF JANUARY:  Match Day
  4. How do I sign up for the match?
    • Visit the National Resident Matching Program website (https://www.nrmp.org/) to register for the match. It is a $50 fee to register and enter the rank list.
  5. Is there an electronic application process like ERAS for residency?
    • Yes. The AMSSM will begin using ERAS for the application process beginning June of 2013 for the 2014 match class.  See AMSSM website for more details.
  6. How do I strengthen my application?
    • A PDF of the ERAS application, available on the AMSSM website, can be used as a guide during residency to exemplify what program directors expect in qualified candidates.  Experience and interest at an early level, presentations at local/regional/national meetings and attending AMSSM conferences can help set you apart during the process.  Meeting program directors and getting involved at the AMSSM Annual Meeting is also a great way to promote your application and learn more about the individual programs.
