Young Receives AMSSM Founders Award

ATLANTA, Ga. – Craig Young, MD, was awarded the 2012 Founders Award at the 21th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, in Atlanta on April 24, 2012. The award is not given annually, but is bestowed when AMSSM leadership determines that someone exemplifies the best that a sports medicine physician can be and do.

Dr. Young is a professor at the departments of orthopedic surgery and community and family medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisc., and team physician for the Milwaukee Brewers. He served as the 2007-08 AMSSM President and currently serves on the AMSSM Foundation Board.

“He has consistently been recognized for his excellence in clinical care and as an educator,” said 2011-12 President Dr. Cindy Chang.

Dr. Young is a passion supporter of nurturing young physicians in the sports medicine community. The AMSSM student membership category is named in his honor.

“Whether it is a young and enthusiastic sports medicine fellow or a medical student who ends up practicing ophthalmology, this could only elevate the profile of primary care sports medicine to the level of every other specialty and beyond,” said Dr. Young.

In addition to serving as medical director of sports medicine in the department, Dr. Young co-directs the Annual Sports Symposium at the Medical College of Wisconsin and serves on a variety of Medical College of Wisconsin and professional committees. He has been the director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship since 1993.

Dr. Young is also a team physician for many professional athletic teams including the Milwaukee Brewers and the US Snowboarding Team. He serves as company physician for the Milwaukee Ballet. Dr. Young also provides coverage for a wide range of sporting and special events, including serving as medical director for the Lakefront Marathon and as a pool physician for the US Olympic Committee, which appointed him as a team physician for the 23rd Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy.

Dr. Young's research has been documented in a variety of published articles, abstracts, research conference talks, and educational presentations. He also shares his expertise with the general public on a regular basis through community lectures and presentations. He is the co-editor of the textbook, Netter’s Sports Medicine. He is on the editorial boards of several journals including the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine and Current Sports Medicine Reports.

The AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of sports medicine physicians whose members are dedicated to education, research, advocacy, and the care of athletes of all ages. Founded in 1991, the AMSSM is now comprised of more than 2,000 sports medicine physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting.
