Princeton’s Head Team Physician Receives 2014 AMSSM Founders’ Award

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Margot Putukian, MD, was awarded the Founders’ Award today at the 23rd annual meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). The award is bestowed when AMSSM leadership determines that a member exemplifies the best that a sports medicine physician can be and do.

“Margot has worked tirelessly on behalf of AMSSM since its founding,” said Dr. Kim Harmon, a sports medicine physician and former president of the AMSSM Board of Directors. “She represents AMSSM and primary care sports medicine brilliantly and is well respected nationally and internationally. “

Lending her expertise in concussion, Dr. Putukian serves as a representative on the NFL's Head, Neck & Spine Committee, as an author of the annual Team Physician Consensus Statements and has been involved with the Zurich International Consensus Conference on Concussion. She has also authored several publications, including the book, Netter's Sports Medicine. Additionally, as president of the AMSSM Foundation, she spearheaded its inaugural annual meeting humanitarian service project prior to the 2014 AMSSM Annual Meeting in New Orleans this past weekend.

Dr. Putukian received her B.S. in Biology from Yale University and her M.D. from Boston University. She completed her internship and residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, and her fellowship in sports medicine at Michigan State University, in East Lansing, MI. After nearly 11 years as a team physician and the director of primary care sports medicine at Penn State University, she began her current position in 2004 as director of athletic medicine and head team physician for Princeton University. Dr. Putukian is board certified in both internal medicine and sports medicine.

About the AMSSM Annual Meeting: More than 1,400 sports medicine physicians from the United States and abroad come together to address advances and challenges in sports medicine through lectures and research. Learn more at https://www.amssm.org/ConferencesDetails.php?IDconf=58&Past=.

About the AMSSM: AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of 2,500 sports medicine physicians dedicated to education, research, advocacy and the care of athletes of all ages. The majority of AMSSM members are primary care physicians with fellowship training and added qualification in sports medicine who then combine their practice of sports medicine with their primary specialty. AMSSM includes members who specialize solely in non-surgical sports medicine and serve as team physicians at the youth level, NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, MLS and NHL, as well as with Olympic teams. By nature of their training and experience, sports medicine physicians are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, sports teams or active individuals who are simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. www.amssm.org
