Dr. Chris Madden Begins His Term as President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)
By AMSSM member Carly Day, MD

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Chris Madden, MD, was installed today as president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) at its 23rd Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans, La. Dr. Madden is a family medicine physician with an added qualification in sports medicine. He currently practices at Longs Peak Family Practice in Longmont, Colo.

He began his studies as an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb. and continued his education by earning his M.D. from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. in 1996. He completed a Family Medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in 1999 as well as a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at Shadyside Hospital in 2000 in Pittsburgh, Pa. He is board certified in Family Practice and Sports Medicine.

Dr. Madden is currently working on a paper titled, The Wilderness Athlete and Adventurer: Pre-Participation Evaluation, Prevention & Care Considerations to be co-published as theme issues in The Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine and Wilderness & Environmental Medicine. One goal he would like to accomplish during his presidency is integrating sports medicine into health care reform and quality initiatives.

He considers Dr. Morris Mellion to be his mentor and notes that, “He was one of the best teachers I have ever known and he had a wisdom unique among his peers, in medicine and otherwise. His integrity as a team physician was incredible.”

Dr. Madden’s advice to young sports medicine physicians is, “Never lose your hunger for learning, your desire to help people, your gratitude for being in a profession that can make such a difference, your openness to views outside of your own, and always, no matter how hard medicine can be, preserve what is most sacred - the healing relationship you have with your patients.”

About the AMSSM Annual Meeting: More than 1,400 sports medicine physicians from the United States and abroad come together to address advances and challenges in sports medicine through lectures and research. Learn more at https://www.amssm.org/ConferencesDetails.php?IDconf=58&Past=.

About the AMSSM: AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of 2,500 sports medicine physicians dedicated to education, research, advocacy and the care of athletes of all ages. The majority of AMSSM members are primary care physicians with fellowship training and added qualification in sports medicine who then combine their practice of sports medicine with their primary specialty. AMSSM includes members who specialize solely in non-surgical sports medicine and serve as team physicians at the youth level, NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, MLS and NHL, as well as with Olympic teams. By nature of their training and experience, sports medicine physicians are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, sports teams or active individuals who are simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. www.amssm.org
