SECTION 3:  JUSTIFICATION AND PRELIMINARY BACKGROUND RESEARCH

Please provide a narrative (in the space below) that addresses the importance of and justification for position statement.  Include relevance to Position Statement definition found in the "AMSSM Position Statement Guidelines" and additional content can include the following:

  • Relevance to Sports Medicine practice including medicolegal, educational and operational implications
  • Basis for developing/supporting legislation
  • New information/recommendations for the membership
  • Cost-benefit and risk-benefit issues
  • Implications for ethnic and minority populations
  • Intended impact of statement


For this Intent to be considered, the following items must be included or documented in this packet:
Preliminary literature search is completed and 5 key references are identified and listed below.


List current statements or publications from other physician organizations (i.e. AAFP, ACP, AAP, AAOS, ACEM, etc.) that address this topic.  Include title, publication date and web link/URL.  If such publications on this topic exist, explain how the proposed intent for statement is different and why it is necessary for the AMSSM to create its own version.

List statements or publications that address this topic from organizations aligned closely with AMSSM (i.e. NCAA, ACSM, AOASM, NATA, CASM, etc.)  Include title, publication date and web link/URL.  If such publications on this topic exist, explain how the proposed intent for statement is different and why it is necessary for the AMSSM to create its own version.

 

Please declare any conflict of interests or disclosures pertinent to this Intent Form.  (Voluntary Disclosure Statements will be completed by all members of the selected writing group and filed by Publications Committee Chair.)

     

SECTION 4:  PROCEDURAL NOTES

  • Submitted intent forms will be considered by the Publications Committee and Publications Committee Chair at the time of receipt.
  • Forms may be returned to the author with comments, feedback and requests for additional information prior to selection meeting.  (If topics are submitted by different Intent authors, priority will be given to the most complete submission.)
  • Selection meetings will be held by the Publications Committee and Publications Committee Chair every six months (prior to Annual Meeting in March and September).  CLARIFICATION:  Each Intent form will be considered during the selections meetings of the upcoming year.  And, it is the Publications Committee's expectation to send one or two Intent forms from each selection meeting for Board approval/denial.
  • The selection topic(s) (along with Intent document and additional comments), will be forwarded to the Board of Directors for a yes/no vote.

Position statements not completed and submitted to the Publications Committee Chair within one year from the time the Board approval of the Intent will require re-review by the Publications Committee Chair.  All intent forms will be kept on file and reconsidered if deemed important to AMSSM based on current issues and policies in the field of Sports Medicine.
