Fellow of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (FAMSSM)

The designation of Fellow of AMSSM (FAMSSM) was created in 2019 to recognize sports medicine physicians who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to lifelong learning, the advancement of the profession, service to AMSSM and leadership in their communities. Conferred on sports medicine physicians who meet specific academic, practice and service requirements, the FAMSSM designation can only be used by Fellows in good standing with the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM).

The first class of recipients was recognized during the 2019 Annual Meeting, and included all AMSSM Past Presidents and living AMSSM Founders.

To be eligible for the FAMSSM Designation, candidates:

  • Are required to have at least 10 consecutive years of Active membership (following Fellowship training).

  • Must have attended 6 out of the last 9 Annual Meetings.

  • Must score a minimum of 30 points within the online FAMSSM application, with a minimum of 10 points from AMSSM involvement. Points are based on education, leadership, service, research, publication, advocacy and clinical care criteria.

Meeting these criteria does not guarantee Fellow designation status. Applications are reviewed by a panel of past recipients to help determine honorees in each given year.

The cost to apply is $50 (non-refundable application fee, which is not charged until application is completed). The FAMSSM Designation does not expire as long as members maintain continuous AMSSM membership (which requires physicians to maintain board certification and medical license and adhere to highest of ethical standards). Emeritus members who have achieved the FAMSSM designation and are now retired from practice are eligible to continue to use the FAMSSM designation.

Fellows of AMSSM can use the FAMSSM designation and receive a unique FAMSSM membership seal and certificate. The application period is open in the fall of each year. New Fellows are announced to the AMSSM membership in January and honored at the next Annual Meeting.

The FAMSSM designation is an important honor of distinction, earned through service, leadership, advancement of the profession and a dedication to lifelong learning. Members are expected to engage in AMSSM activities and remain financially current with their membership dues in order to continue to use the designation. Once membership lapses, a sports medicine physician is no longer legally allowed to display FAMSSM after their name and medical degree in any context. The designation is the exclusive intellectual property of AMSSM. Misuse of the FAMSSM designation by nonmembers is pursued by AMSSM.
